Track teams compete at Concordia Oles

Oles face tough competition in first MIAC meet of season

The St. Olaf men’s and women’s track and field teams were in action Saturday at the Concordia Holst Invite in St. Paul, Minn.  
The Ole men were successful in the sprinting events, with James McFarlin ’16 running a time of 10.93 seconds in the 100-meter dash and recording a time of 22.35 seconds in the 200-meter dash.  McFarlin placed 16th and 15th in these events, respectively.  Joe Pugh ’18 led the Oles in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.10 seconds. The 1500-meter run featured a group of five Oles finishing within six seconds of each other. Andrew Plumb ’19 crossed the finish line first in the group with a time of 4:18.67, with Derek DeBlieck ’18 rounding out a group consisting of Justin Furcich ’19, Alec Kirtley ’19 and Liam Getzloff ’19 with a 4:24.86 finish. In the field events, Ethan Lunning ’16 threw the hammer 46.34 meters to finish 15th overall.
The Ole women also had a successful day on the track, highlighted by a fantastic third-place finish in the 4x400 relay.  The team consisting of Abby Stets ’18, Abbey Schnaith ’16, Susan Hoops ’17 and Madison Van Wylen ’16 edged out cross-town rival Carleton College by .03 seconds.  Van Wylen, coming down the final stretch, held off a gaining Carleton runner just long enough to clinch the third-place finish. These four individuals also helped the team out in other events throughout the day. Stets placed 10th in the 100-meter dash with a solid time of 12.65 seconds and finished 11th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.12 seconds. Van Wylen edged out Stets in the 200-meter dash with a sixth-place finish and a time of 25.77 seconds. 
Josefine Brekke ’17 led the Ole women in the 1500-meter run, finishing fifth and breaking the five-minute mark with a time of 4:52.33.  In the field events, Kelsey Weed ’19 threw the javelin 32.56 meters, earning her a sixth-place finish.
The Ole men are back in action next weekend at the Phil Esten Challenge in La Crosse, Wis. on Friday and at the Carleton Relays on Saturday. The Ole women will be back at home for their next meet as the hosts of the Manitou Classic on Friday at Manitou Track.  The meet is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
