Rebounding from a tough 3-0 upset at the hands of St. John's Saturday, the St. Olaf men's soccer team rallied past Concordia-Moorhead 3-2 in two overtimes Wednesday afternoon.

The week opened with a thud as previously winless St. John's notched their first MIAC win. The Johnnies blitzed the Oles for a pair of quick goals, gaining a 2-0 lead six minutes in before the dust settled.

The Oles were put on the defensive for the rest of the first half, getting out shot 12-2 and surrendering a third goal at the 28-minute mark.

The Johnnies coasted through the second half, employing a conservative scheme to preserve their 3-0 lead for the win.

St. John's ended the game with a 19-11 advantage in total shots, with a slim 6-5 lead in shots on goal.

Kevin Friede '09 was in net for the Oles, stopping three shots in the losing effort.

Wednesday afternoon against Concordia-Moorhead would feature a much more balanced match-up, as it would take two overtimes to decide the winner.

The game began slowly, as both squads took awhile to warm up in the chilly autumn weather. Scoring chances were limited for each team before the Cobbers broke through in the 36th minute to take a 1-0 advantage into the break.

Twelve minutes into the second half, the Oles snapped a 216-minute scoring drought on a goal by Nate Swenson '10, assisted by John Zietlow '11. The Cobbers responded quickly though, regaining the lead with a goal in the 69th minute.

The back-and-forth affair would not end there, however, as the Oles refused to be put away as Zietlow was set up by Phil Kennedy '09 for the tying goal with seven minutes left in regulation.

Zietlow would also knock in the game-winner in the 108th minute, giving the Oles the hard-fought victory.

"The team showed heart, class and persistence today," Zietlow said. "Coming from behind twice to get a conference win was a great way to end the game and get a win in conference."

The Oles out shot the Cobbers 21-16 in the game. They also held a 10-6 edge in shots on goal.

Friede was again called upon again to start in goal for the Oles, picking up four saves to record the win.

St. Olaf maintained a winning MIAC record with the two-game split, moving to 3-2 and 6-4 overall. The Oles' lone game this week is Wednesday at Bethel. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. They also take on team alumni Saturday as part of homecoming festivities.
