The St. Olaf men's golf team split in two different directions this week, with team members playing at both the Twin Cities Classic and the Winona State Invitational.

Mack Traynor '09 and Bror Herrick '09 were the only two members able to attend the Twin Cities Classic this weekend, while the rest of the team headed southwest to the Winona State Invitational.

In this three-day, 54-hole tournament, Traynor tied for 35th place, with rounds posted at 75, 76, and 78. He finished 13-over par. Herrick tied for 88th place, with rounds posted at 81, 77, and 84, good for a 26-over par finish.

Gustavus Adolphus hosted the tournament, which was held at three separate courses: Elk River Country Club, The Links at Northfolk and White Bear Yacht Club. Twenty-three teams fielded full squads at the tournament, with Illinois Wesleyan winning with a six-over par team score.

Because the last day of the tournament was on Monday, most of the golf team was unable to attend. A few more members of the team went to a meet in Rochester against a pair of division II schools, finishing just 15 strokes off the pace in third with a team score of 315. Winona State won the 18-hole match with a score of 300.

Head coach Glen Peterson '79 was very pleased with all his golfers' performances. He said they wanted to "play themselves into shape" for the upcoming MIAC Championships, the premier meet on the team's schedule. Peterson also noted that the team has competed in five consecutive weekend tournaments, meaning they should be sharp and "ready to go" for the conference meet.

The men's squad has some playing experience at the site of this year's MIAC Championships, Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids, Minn. The Oles played two tournaments there last year, including the MIAC meet, where they finished in fourth place in a tight meet that came down to the final day. Gustavus, St. John's and St. Thomas were the top three placers at the meet.

The Oles will set out to improve upon that finish this Saturday as they open the three-day tournament, which will wrap up Monday.
