Oles unable to spoil Gustavus homecoming

The St. Olaf football team suffered its third consecutive loss on Saturday Sept. 28, with a 19-45 defeat at the hands of Gustavus Adolphus College. The loss snapped a 10-game winning streak over Gustavus that dated back to 2002.

Despite leading 13-7 early in the second-quarter, the Oles were unable to provide any resistance against a Gustavus football team that was desperate for a homecoming victory.

The Gusties racked up over 400 yards of total offense and came up with four interceptions off St. Olaf quarterback Nate Penz ’16. Penz had touchdown passes on consecutive possessions to Joel Reinhardt ’14  and Jake Schmiesing ’14 in the first quarter. It was all downhill from that point for the Oles, as Gustavus scored on their next five possessions. The final three quarters resulted in a 38-6 score against St. Olaf.

Reinhardt had three receptions for 71 yards, and Stephen Asp had four for 75 yards. Penz completed 14 of 27 passes, but his four interceptions put the Oles behind.

St. Olaf had an interception from Derek Henle ’14 in Gustavus territory to set up a 9-yard touchdown from Penz to Schmiesing.

The Oles (1-3, 0-2 MIAC) will be desperate to tally their first MIAC victory of the season against St. John’s University this Saturday, Oct. 5, on homecoming weekend.

St. John’s (3-1, 1-1 MIAC) suffered a shock loss to Concordia College last weekend after defeating national powerhouse University of St. Thomas the week before. A loss would undoubtedly crush any title aspirations that the Oles hold for the current season.
