After gaining only one point against St. Mary’s in their final regular season series, the St. Olaf women’s hockey team steamrolled the Cardinals in Tuesday’s MIAC opener 3-1 to advance to the conference semifinal. The Oles will travel to top-seeded Gustavus Thursday night to play for a berth in the championship game.
Goalie Jessica Ptachick ’11 exhibited strong, consistent play in all three contests, allowing only one goal in each game and making 25 saves in Tuesday’s playoff opener. St. Olaf skated to a 1-1 draw Friday before being shut out 1-0 Saturday. However, all that would be lost was home ice as sixth-place Bethel suffered a one-goal defeat to allow the Oles to advance into postseason play.
The offensive attack for the Oles started early Tuesday, with Kari McClintick ’10 and Kayla Hill ’10 setting up Katie Iraci ’11 one minute and 24 seconds into the game. Hill added the eventual game-winner just over seven minutes into the second period, before Meghan Stumpf ’11 put the game away with her seventh goal of the season. St. Mary’s broke up the shutout bid late in the third period, scoring with an extra attacker, but the defense clamped down to preserve the victory.
The puck drops at 7 p.m. for Thursday night’s semifinal against the Gusties. The Ole women split a pair with eighth-ranked Gustavus earlier this year, winning 3-2 on the road before falling 3-1 at home.
