The St. Olaf men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams both earned runner-up honors at the four-team Carthage Invite this weekend.
Chris Bateman ’11 had yet another dominant performance in the pool, winning three individual events and posting NCAA “A” cut times in the 400 IM and the 200 Breast.
Bateman also took home first place in the 500 free and combined with Kyle Biesecker ’11, Brock Edwards ’10 and Nate Bentley ’10 to win the 4x200 relay in 6:58.04. Bentley earned an individual win in the 200 IM while Edwards claimed first in the 200 free.
Chase Liaboe ’12 picked up the Ole men’s other individual win in the 200 butterfly, while Bateman, Bentley, Luke Money ’11 and Luke Murrell ’11 teamed up to win the medley relay.
St. Olaf, ranked 11th in the most recent collegeswimming.com poll, was upset by 20th-ranked Carthage College in the team standings.
Bateman’s efforts earned him MIAC swimmer of the week distinction. He is the second Ole, including Edwards, to win the award this season.
Despite not winning a single individual event, the Ole women used their overall depth to guide them to a second-place finish behind eighth-ranked Carthage College.
Several swimmers attained second-place finishes, with Jamie Freeden ’10 earning three in the 400 IM, 200 free and 1,650 free.
Katie Kubat ’12 came in second in the 200 back and 200 breast, while Maura Nicholson ‘11 and Lauren Snyder ’12 captured runner-up honors as well. Megan Laedtke ‘13 and Lydia Feldman ‘13 added third-place finishes.
Both teams are off until the Ed Kennedy Classic in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Dec. 31, where they will resume preparation for postseason action.
The Ole men are seeking to repeat as MIAC champions while the women’s contingent looks to improve upon their fourth-place finish from a year ago.
