Lauren Tomford ’10 scored four goals in two games as the St. Olaf women’s hockey team dominated Hamline en route to a series sweep this weekend. The Oles shut out the Pipers 5-0 in Friday’s opener before putting on a 7-1 demolition at home. The pair of victories vaulted the Ole women into a second-place tie with St. Catherine in the MIAC standings behind St. Thomas.
It was a family affair in the first period of Friday night’s opener, as first year Nicole Stumpf and Meghan Stumpf ’11 picked up assists on Tomford’s power-play goal midway through the session. Kari McClintick ’10 set up Kim McClintick ’10 in the 17th minute, followed by Nicole Stumpf and Bridget Anderson ’11 creating a scoring opportunity for Meghan Stumpf’s first goal of the year, giving St. Olaf a 3-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
Tomford scored again on the power play in the second period, before Alison Umland’s ’13 goal provided the final margin of victory in the third. Jessica Ptachick ’11 made 18 saves in the shutout effort.
In Saturday’s finale, Tomford again led the offensive attack at the outset, scoring twice late in the first period for her third and fourth goals of the series and season. The Ole offense remained relentless throughout, scoring three more times in the second and pouring in two third-period goals on their way to a 7-1 victory.
St. Olaf competes against five-time defending MIAC champions Gustavus this weekend. Friday’s game is on the road before the two teams meet Saturday at the Northfield Ice Arena at 7 p.m.
The Oles were outscored 15-2 by the Gusties in three losses last year, including a 5-0 defeat in the MIAC semifinals.
